A Little Bit About Myself…
When I was six years old, my family and I moved from Boston (US) to Barcelona (Spain) where both my parents were from. In Spain people called me Airin - the Spanish phonetically pronunciation of Irene. As I was learning to read and write, that is how I signed my own drawings. It became my nickname and today that is still how I sign my work.
For me drawing was a universal language that helped me communicate with family members spread out all over the European continent. Ever since, drawing has been the safest way for me to express myself.
In 2016 I moved to San Francisco and earned my MFA in illustration at the Academy of Art University. In 2019 I signed with my agent Astound and I have illustrated 8 children’s books since then with some of the biggest publishers in the world.
To be able to create something out of nothing with my hands has always made me feel empowered. I feel extremely lucky to be able to do the work I do because I enjoy every minute of it.
Just when I thought things couldn’t get better they did when I became a mother in 2022. My son is one of my biggest inspirations. I don’t think I will ever get the chance again to study the human body in infancy from so close by. Every minute with him is precious.
